About Cindy
Cindy looks like the photographs, which is the first thing people say and the least interesting. She is 168 cm and slim, long limbed enough that she never quite fits a small chair, and her hair is long, wavy and blonde, left to do roughly what it wants. Blue eyes. Her evening clothes are simple to the point of plain: one good dress, no jewellery worth insuring, and a coat chosen for a riverside wind rather than a photograph.
Mid twenties, English, and much funnier than the pictures suggest. She has a habit of asking the second question rather than the first, which catches people out pleasantly. She reads novels on trains and finishes them. She is honest when she does not know something and unbothered about saying so. Nobody has ever described an evening with her as hard work.
Her Windsor evening usually starts at Browns on the Promenade, on Barry Avenue, where the tables look straight out at the water and the swans behave badly. From there it is four minutes up to the High Street hotels, less if you cut through the arches at Windsor Royal Station. She lives in Chelsea and drives out, which takes about an hour when the M4 is behaving and rather longer when it is not, so she builds the delay into her own timing rather than yours.

An evening with Cindy
She picks the table by the window and gets there first. The Promenade is a strange bit of Windsor, half tourist boat and half real town, and Cindy enjoys watching both. Dinner with her is long: she orders early, eats properly, and talks the whole way through without ever making it feel like an interview. If it is warm you walk afterwards, up past the theatre and round the back of the castle wall, which takes about fifteen minutes and shows you a Windsor the day trippers miss. If it is not warm, the hotel bar is four minutes away and she will not pretend to prefer the weather. She is easy, funny and completely present, and she never checks her phone at the table.

01Riverside or castle side?
River first, castle after dark. The order matters. Doing it the other way round is how you end up eating at half past ten.
02What makes an evening go badly?
Booking nothing and deciding everything at seven. Out here that means walking past three full restaurants in the rain.
03What do you do with an hour to spare?
Sit outside with a coffee and read. I have finished more books on that Promenade than anywhere else.
