A town that empties at six and fills up again at eight

The centre of Slough can be crossed on foot in a quarter of an hour, and most of what it holds is daytime business: the offices around the station, the High Street, the bus interchange. By six the working town has gone home, and the hotels along Cippenham Lane and the Uxbridge Road have filled with people who arrived that afternoon. That handover is the whole character of the place. It is also why an evening booked here almost never runs late for reasons outside the room.

The building visitors notice first is The Curve on William Street, the glass block beside the bus station holding the library and a small theatre space, four minutes from the platform. There is usually something on in it. Beyond that the honest summary is that Slough makes an excellent base and a modest night out, and Windsor is a quarter of an hour away for anyone who wants the other thing.

Where people actually stay in SL1

SL1 2YE, on Cippenham Lane, sits on the western edge of town two minutes from junction 6 of the M4, which makes it the simplest of the three to drive to and the least rewarding to walk from. SL1 2NH, on Church Street in Chalvey, is south of the ring road and roughly equidistant between the station and the motorway. SL1 1SU, on the Uxbridge Road, is the one to pick if you would rather be able to walk into the town centre after dinner.

Five minutes from the platform to the ring road

Slough station carries Great Western services and the Elizabeth line, and it is about five minutes on foot from the middle of town. That single fact does more work than anything else on this page. Paddington is roughly twenty minutes on a fast train, and the Elizabeth line runs late enough that a companion travelling out from central London is rarely the reason an evening begins later than you wanted it to.

Langley is the other station in this postcode's orbit and it is a thirty five minute walk, so treat it as a car journey. By road, junction 6 of the M4 is a couple of minutes from the Cippenham Lane hotels, Windsor is about fifteen minutes south, Burnham twelve minutes north west, and Heathrow roughly twenty minutes east on a clear evening and noticeably more at five o'clock.

The kind of evening people ask for here

Most messages arrive from people staying one or two nights: a contract at one of the business parks, a run of meetings, an early flight out of Heathrow. They are tired, they have a fixed window, and they want company that turns up when it said it would, sits down and makes an ordinary hotel bar into a decent evening. There is very little appetite for ceremony in SL1 and none of the women here manufactures any.

Two hours is the common booking in Slough and it works: a drink downstairs, then dinner either in the hotel or a short ride away. Three hours suits anyone who wants the meal to run long or who would rather go into Windsor for it. Companions who reach SL1 quickest

Ten to twenty minutes in any direction

North east, the Heathrow side of the town picks up at junction 5 and the hotels there are built for drivers. North west, Burnham is twelve minutes by car and feels a great deal further than that. South, Windsor and its High Street hotels take a quarter of an hour. East, the Terminal 5 belt at Colnbrook is about fifteen minutes, and west, Maidenhead is two stops on the line and a different mood entirely.
