Vanessa travels light and thinks everybody else should. Her clothes are chosen for a hotel corridor rather than a red carpet: one dark dress, a coat with pockets, and a bag small enough to keep on her lap in a taxi.

She takes over gently. She reads on planes, she sleeps anywhere, and she has an unflappability that is genuinely useful in a place where nothing runs quite to schedule.
Longford is a hamlet on the Bath Road with Terminal 5 at the end of the runway beyond it, and her evenings usually run from the low hotel at Longford, which is five minutes from the terminal and about twenty on foot if you are determined. The old village street behind it still has a bridge over the Colne and two pubs older than the airport. An evening with Vanessa
The night before an early flight is its own particular thing, and Vanessa is better at it than anyone. She does not try to make it a big evening. A drink, dinner in the building because at this end of the Bath Road there is no sensible alternative after nine, and a long unhurried stretch afterwards with the aircraft noise going over every couple of minutes. If there is light left she will take you down the old street behind the hotel, five minutes, a bridge over the Colne and two pubs that were here when this was farmland. Then back, and she is firm about a sensible finish, because she has watched a lot of people miss a six o'clock departure and does not intend to cause another one.

Five minutes by car and about twenty on foot along the Bath Road. It is the closest village to the runway by some distance.
02Early flight the next morning, is that a problem?
