Built around a junction, not a high street

The thing to understand about Langley is that junction 5 is its centre of gravity. Ditton Road runs down to it, the hotels sit on it, and nearly every evening booked here begins with somebody arriving off the motorway rather than out of a station. That is not a complaint. It makes Langley one of the easiest places in this county to reach at short notice from anywhere west of London.

What surprises people is Langley Park, the country park immediately north of the village, where avenues of trees run for longer than seems reasonable somewhere fifteen minutes from a runway. On a light evening it is the best hour available here and it takes ten minutes to reach. Guests book rooms in SL3 for a year without ever learning it exists.

The rooms on and around Ditton Road

A large hotel stands on Ditton Road, SL3 8PT, effectively on top of junction 5, and it is where most Langley bookings happen. SL3 0PH on the Old Bath Road at Colnbrook, and SL3 0AT on Calder Way, share the postcode district but sit much closer to the airport than to the village. Eight minutes to the platform, a car for everything else

Langley station is eight minutes on foot from the middle of the village and carries Great Western and Elizabeth line services, which is why a companion travelling from London can be here in well under an hour. Iver is roughly thirty minutes on foot and Slough about thirty five, so both are journeys rather than walks.

By road, junction 5 is a minute away, Slough town centre ten, Heathrow fifteen on a quiet evening and rather more at five o'clock, Windsor about twenty. Dinner is a drive. We would rather write that plainly than let you find it out in the rain, halfway between a hotel car park and a dual carriageway.

Three hours is the honest length here

An hour in Langley is mostly the hotel, which some guests want and which is perfectly fine. Anything involving a table somewhere decent wants three, because the journey in both directions sits inside the booking. Evenings that run on to Heathrow from here also take three hours as a minimum with the travel counted in, and that floor is quoted openly rather than discovered later.

Sort the car before she gets there rather than at the door: it improves the first twenty minutes enormously. Her fee is given to her in person as she arrives, exactly the figure Etta wrote in her reply, and the restaurant bill is a separate matter altogether.

Where SL3 runs out

West is Slough town centre, ten minutes away with a genuine high street on the end of it. East, Colnbrook and the Terminal 5 hotels are five minutes on the far side of the motorway. South, the river at Datchet is about twelve minutes and another world. And the terminals themselves are a quarter of an hour, which is why so many evenings booked in Langley finish with an early alarm.
