Airport evenings have their own physics

You will have been awake too long, the room will be too warm, and the last thing anybody wants is company being lively at them. So the evenings booked here start slow on purpose: a drink downstairs, the phone face down, and a conversation that does not require you to be impressive about anything. If you ate on the plane, dinner gets skipped and nobody minds.

The other rule of TW6 is that the hour means nothing. Half past eleven is an ordinary start time in this postcode, three in the morning happens, and neither costs more than an eight o'clock booking in Windsor would. It is the one part of the country where nobody considers an odd hour odd.

The rooms, terminal by terminal

TW6 2GD is attached to Terminal 5 by a walkway, which makes it the only hotel here you can reach without weather. Five minutes from the gate, no car and no negotiation. The other Terminal 5 house is at Colnbrook, SL3 0FF, a short run west of the terminal and covered properly on the Colnbrook page.

For the central terminals, one hotel sits in the middle of the airport itself. On the northern edge, TW6 2AQ on the Bath Road, and the long one further along the same road, are both a short ride from Terminals 2 and 3. None of these is told anything about a booking, and this desk has no arrangement with any hotel at the airport.

Three stations, all of them five minutes from a gate

Heathrow Terminal 5 has the Piccadilly line, the Elizabeth line and the Heathrow Express, and the station is about five minutes from the gates. Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3 is the same, with the same three services. Heathrow Terminal 4 has the Piccadilly and Elizabeth lines and is also around five minutes in.

The journey that matters, though, is the one your companion makes. From central London the Piccadilly or Elizabeth line takes between forty five minutes and an hour door to door, and from the Berkshire side it is ten to twenty minutes by road. That is the reason for the three hour minimum: below it, too much of the booking is corridor.

Which terminal is easiest, and what to tell the desk

Terminal 5 is the simplest because of that walkway. You can go from gate to a drink without standing outside once, which matters in February. Terminals 2 and 3 are next, with the central cluster and the Bath Road hotels a short ride away. Terminal 4 is the outlier and always worth an extra ten minutes in the planning.

Send a flight number rather than an estimate. Etta will hold the window and move it if the inbound slips, which happens often enough to be routine. The fee is handed to your companion in person when she arrives, and it matches the figure agreed before she set out, whatever the clock says by the time she does.

Who takes terminal evenings

Milena is the calmest of the three, 175 cm and wholly unruffled by an airport hotel at midnight, with an unusual tolerance for other people's exhaustion. Nora is awake at hours that defeat most people and will happily take a booking that starts before dawn. Stacy is unfazed by a three in the morning arrival and reads long books while she waits for one.

Close in, Danielle, Patricia and Roxi cover the Colnbrook belt minutes west of Terminal 5, Vanessa is at the Longford end of the Bath Road, and Sonya comes down from West Drayton in about ten minutes.

Off the perimeter

West of the fence, Colnbrook has the Terminal 5 hotel belt and an old High Street behind it. Longford is on the Bath Road at the western end, a twenty minute walk from T5 and quieter than that suggests. Harmondsworth is the village north west of the runways. Further out, Langley is fifteen minutes into Berkshire and a completely different evening.
