About Violetta
Violetta is 178 cm and tall and slender with it, which in a small Berkshire dining room is not something anybody misses. Her hair is long, black and sleek straight, and her eyes are brown and level. She dresses with a certain amount of ceremony, because she can: a long line, a good coat, one piece of jewellery. She has the useful ability to look expensive in a room where nobody else is trying.
Early thirties, English, poised and unexpectedly warm once the first drink is down. She does not chatter. She does ask, quite early, what you would actually like the evening to be, and she listens to the answer properly rather than filing it. She likes old buildings, cold rivers and walking home rather than being driven. Her humour is precise and comes without warning.
In Windsor she starts most often at the hotel low on Thames Street, which sits on the river right beside the bridge with the castle immediately above it. The terrace on a warm evening is the best seat in the town and she knows it. It is a three minute walk from Windsor and Eton Central and two from the bridge into Eton. An evening with Violetta
Thames Street at seven is the best address in the county and she treats it accordingly. The terrace first, with the bridge on one side and the castle wall going gold on the other, and a drink that lasts longer than it should. Violetta is unhurried and she does not perform. Dinner is close, and afterwards there is the walk over the bridge into Eton, which takes ninety seconds and is the single thing she recommends to every guest who has not done it. She is elegant company without being cool company, and she is happy to take an evening wherever it wants to go. It finishes at your hotel door, and she walks to the station rather than waiting for a car.

01Best seat in Windsor?
The terrace by the bridge, an hour before sunset. Everything else in this town is a consolation prize. One drink there, taken slowly, and I notice the wall change colour before anybody else does.
02Do you mind being looked at?
I stopped noticing around the time I stopped growing. In a town full of visitors nobody is looking for very long anyway.
03Train or car back to London?
Train, from Riverside, straight into Waterloo in under an hour. I would rather read for fifty minutes than sit on the M4.
