Why ten hours changes the evening

Every shorter booking has an end you can see coming. An overnight does not, and guests notice the difference within the first hour. There is no arithmetic being done at the table, no glance at a watch before the last course, and no decision to make about whether the bar is worth it. You go for the drink, you stay for the second one, and the evening finds its own length.

It suits the tail end of a long trip better than the start of one. People who have been awake since five and sitting in rooms all day tend to book an hour and regret it. The overnight is the opposite mistake and a considerably happier one.

The night before a dawn departure

Most overnights on this desk sit under the Heathrow flight path in one form or another, because a six in the morning departure ruins the evening before it whatever you do. How the ten hours tend to run

Most start at nine. The first couple of hours go on dinner, in the hotel or a short drive away, and the bar afterwards takes whatever time the conversation asks for. At some point after midnight the evening goes quiet in the way late evenings do, and nothing is timetabled after that except the alarm. Ten hours from nine ends at seven, which leaves time for breakfast together before most morning departures, and on a later flight the start simply moves back to match.

If the flight or the night moves

Flights get cancelled and meetings get pushed to the following day, and an overnight is the booking most exposed to both. Tell Etta as soon as it happens.
