Golden blonde, blue eyed and 170 cm, Nancy is exactly as striking as that sounds and rather more relaxed about it than you would expect. Boulters Lock is where she likes to begin, a mile north of Maidenhead Bridge where the river widens and the boats queue up in summer. An hour there before dinner sets the tone for everything after, and the hotels off Shoppenhangers Road and Manor Lane are ten minutes away by car. Covent Garden is where she lives, and Maidenhead is fifty minutes or so up the Elizabeth line, though she will tell you plainly that the last train home is earlier than a London evening prepares you for.

An evening with Nancy
Get there for the last of the light and the lock does the rest. Nancy walks the towpath at a genuinely slow pace, points out the boats she covets, and gets you talking without any obvious effort. It is fifteen minutes from the bridge to Ray Mill Island and back, and it turns two strangers into people having a conversation. Dinner follows, either riverside or back at the hotel, and she is content with either as long as nobody is watching a clock. She is generous company, quick to laugh and entirely comfortable in a silence. If the weather has made the towpath impossible she will say so on the phone rather than let you stand in it. Maidenhead empties early and the towpath is dark by ten, so the last hour belongs indoors and she is content with that.

01Why start at the lock?
Because you cannot hurry on a towpath. Twenty minutes of that and the evening has already found its pace.
02Maidenhead or Windsor for a river evening?
Maidenhead. Fewer people, better water, and the boats are actually being used rather than photographed. I order fish if there is any, at a table where I can still see the water.
03Last train back to London?
Earlier than you would like. The Elizabeth line is good but it is not a night bus, so a long evening needs booking as one.
